People ask me if I miss home. I tell them that I don't miss the US at all. I am only here for five months total, and I decided to enjoy it, and not be depressed. However, I do miss people from home. And one thing that I've come more fully to know, since I've been living in Germany, is how wonderful and loving my family and friends really are. Simple things like

Applying for an internship (in English this time)

I am finally an intern with Attorney Plettenberg. I began the search for an internship while i was still in the US. My German Professor at Ripon had the idea before I had even realized that it was an option for me. She of course knew of my interest in the field of Law.
First, I had to write a resume and a list of desired law firms and send them to Katharina Schmitt from the Germany Hands-On Program. All I knew was that I'd like to work with Family Law or Criminal Law. Katharina asked the five law firms if they'd like an American intern, but they all declined. Later, she contacted a lawyer who had worked with a Ripon student three years earlier.
I received an email with the attorney's telephone number. It was my responsibility to call him and make an appointment. This wasn't a problem for me, since I went through a similar process when looking for internships in the US. During my interview with Herr Plettenberg, we talked about my internship, for example, my expectations and what I'd like to accomplish there. He then introduced me to the other attorneys and secretaries in the office.
Herr Plettenberg practices Family Law and seems very eager to help. He studied English for a couple months in Canada, so has sympathy for a foreigner learning a new language.
I decided that I will work 12-16 hours a week at the law office, in addition to my Univeristy and International Office classes. I know that it will be a lot of work and that the language will be a bit difficult, but I have the will to accomplish it.

Praktikumssuche/ Internship Journal

Nach einer langen Suche bin ich ein Praktikantin bei dem Rechtsanwalt Plettenberg geworden. Meine Suche fing in den USA an. Es war die Idee meiner Professorin bei Ripon College. Sie wusste dass ich mich für Jura interessiere, aber ich wusste nicht dass ein Praktikum in Deutschland möglich wäre.
Ich musste eine Lebenslauf und eine Liste gewünschte Rechtsanwaltkanzleien nach Katharina Schmitt von dem Germany Hands-On Programm schicken. Ich wusste nur dass ich mit Familienrecht oder Strafrecht arbeiten möchte. Katharina fragte die fünf Rechtsanwaltkanzleien ob sie eine Amerikanische Praktikantin möchten, aber alle abgelehnten. Schliesslich fragte Katharina ein Rechtsanwalt der mit einer Ripon Studentin vor drei Jahre arbeitete.
Katharina schickte mir ein Email mit seiner Telefonnummer, und ich musste er selbst anrufen. Dass war kein Problem, weil ich machte in den USA das gleiche Bewerben um ein Praktikum zu bekommen. Ich plante einen Termin mit Herr Plettenberg, und wir sprachen über meine Stelle. Zum Beispiel, wir sprachen über meinen Erwartungen und was ich machen möchten. Danach vorstellte er mich die andere Rechtsanwälte und Sekretärinnen in dem Büro.
Herr Plettenberg praktizierte Familienrecht und ist siemlich hilfsbereit. Er studierte Englisch einmal in Kanada, deswegen hat er Mitgefühl für eine Ausländerin die eine Fremdsprache lernt.
Ich entschiede dass ich um 12-16 Stunden pro Woche arbeiten kann ausser meine Uni- und Auslandsamtkurse. Ich weiss dass es viel Arbeit gäbe und dass die Sprache ein bisschen schwierig wäre, aber ich der Wille es zu schaffen habe.
